Month of Gratitude, Day 16: Public Radio, and Radio Shows

I'm grateful for public radio, and the shows it hosts.

Especially while Bean Up The Nose Art is housed up on Whidbey Island, Seattle's public radio station (which shall remain nameless) is playing almost all day long.  Partly this is because Gracie the Dog likes the calm voices.  A bigger part is because of what I learn and am entertained by.  And for that, I'm grateful.

Favorites?  "The Vinyl Cafe."  "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me." "The Splendid Table."  "Weekday," the local show from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. that covers a little bit of everything . . . local and national politics, entertainment, gardening, a weekly check in from Canada . . . .

Radio is fabulous.  You can listen while you are going about your business, and learn the most amazing things . . . about spiritualism (Abraham Lincoln held a seance in the White House) around the time of the Civil War . . . about up-and-coming hiphop artists . . . about where to find wild huckleberries in the Pacific Northwest . . . . then, you are treated to wonderful storytellers and radio players, like on "A Prairie Home Companion."

Whidbey Island has its own public radio station:  KWPA, 96.9

It's signal's not particularly strong . . . but you can listen and learn in their streaming and podcast versions.

And they're broadcasting Whidbey Island's own monthly radio show, "Postcards from Whidbey."  The shows are taped live at the historic Crockett Barn in Ebey's National Historic Reserve:

Inside, the barn is set with a stage, decorated each month by local businesses (this month, by Aqua):

And each show is hosted by William and Elizabeth:

and ably acted by the members of the Penn Cove Players:

Each two-hour show also features musical guests, audience participation, and yummy goodies on which to munch during intermission.  Each show is also sponsored by local businesses . . . which this month includes (you guessed it) Bean Up The Nose Art.  William and Elizabeth have written a "spot" that I can't wait to see at Saturday night's performance.  7:00 p.m.  Be there!  (Or, Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m.)

Thanks, all you folks who work on public radio.   I'm grateful for your talents, and for the information and entertainment that you provide every day.
